British settlement
When we are talking about the effects that british had on Australia we have been influenced by Britain on a number of things like: The way we dress, most food, our government system and our sports we play. The british had the effect on this for us, we get most of our things from the british. We are a very multi cultural country but a variety of food is inspired by the british. The British had a really huge impact on the way the indigenous lived even wildlife.
1900s schooling
Our
schooling today is way different and the punishment isn’t as strict, we do not
get hit with anything because it would be classified as “child abuse” and that
is now illegal. Our private schools are currently mixed genders and we finish
school in grade 12 (17 years of age unless held back a grade) We now have uniforms assigned to us for different schools and it is compulsory to wear shoes and a hat to keep sun safe.
Immigration Restriction Act 1901
The immigration restriction act was an act of the parliament of Australia, which really limited immigration to Australia. This helped form the "White Australia Policy". This helped send back some illegal things and people. This helped the officers prevent people from coming into Australia. This act started a new range of federal crimes linking to immigration. Some illegal immigrants could be deported and put in jail for up to 6 months. The immigration restriction act stated that all immigrants had to sign in addition to 50 words in European language as directed by the officer. The immigration restriction act was eventually replaced by the migration act 1958. Although, the white Australian policy was not fully eliminated until 1973. Quote: "The Dictation Test was administered 805 times in
1902–03 with 46 people passing and 554 times in 1904–09 with only six people
successful. After 1909 no person passed the Dictation Test and people who
failed were refused entry or deported".

Catherine Helen Spence "Key People"

- Catherine was born on the 31st October 1825
- 1872 Spence helped Caroline Emily Clark to found the Boarding-Out Society, to board orphaned, needy and reformed children in the homes of families that would take each child in, and to visit them as well as to check on their behaviour towards the caretaker and the treatment they are getting.
- Catherine was an official of the
society in 1872-86 and worked persistently as a visitor.
When the State Children's
Council was founded in 1886 she became a member, and later became a member of
the Destitute Board.
- A lot of Catherine’s work was for education, she supported the
foundation of kindergartens and government secondary schools for young and
youthful girls.
- Catherine joined the battle for female suffrage in 1891 and became a
vice-president of the Women's Suffrage League of South Australia. After South
Australian women were enfranchised in 1894, she supported campaigns in New
South Wales and Victoria and spoke at meetings of the Women's League, a body
formed in Adelaide for the political schooling of women.
- She urged the establishing of a
local association affiliated with the International Council of Women. Her work on
this also won her acclaim; she had become a symbol of what Australian women
could attempt and look up to as a role model.
- Catherine passed away 3rd April 1910
Racism today!
Racism is to do with people from a different culture being rude about another culture by talking disrespectfully about their skin tone, the way they talk, where their from, what they look like and jokes about their race. Being different is a good thing that some others may find bad, it is not known why but we are all a human been.Racism is not only about talking about the person itself but actually talking about what races are better at somethings then the others. Racists do not want to live in multi-racial societies, rather they want to love amongst their own kind.
Australia is an egalitarian society
Do you think that Australia is an egalitarian
society?
Yes I believe that Australia is an egalitarian society
because we show respect and display all of the quality’s that make us all
equal, and our government can make us have equal rights to one another. It is belief that everyones equal and they all are equal no matter whats different about them.
Create 3rd Entry: “Living and Working in Australia c.1900”
In the 1900s the women’s clothing was very long to hide away
all skin. They were very restricted on what they wore so they would hide their
own skin because it was known to be disrespectful and not very formal in their
modern day. The Chinese and Japanese also wore long clothing to protect their
skin because they wanted to be white and show their natural beauty.
In our society today we get away with showing off as much
skin as possible because it’s very fashionable. We do not get judged as much on
what we wear although sometimes we may get minor little comments depending on
wether we look good or not. Nowadays we have clothing made for different
events, wether its formal, party or just casual evening clothes. Our clothes
are made out of all different types of materials suitable for different types
of weather conditions.
Mongolian octopus
The Mongolian octopus is an Australian cartoon made in 1886, its showing the emotions of the white Australia's thoughts on the Chinese coming over to their country. It shows that the Mongolian octopus is referring to the Chinese as being the cause of our cheap labour, customs robbery, opium, typhoid and immorality. It is the cause for our white Australian policy because of the racism involved in this nasty situation. The white Australians were very racist, some thought that the Chinese will take all their jobs and invade and cause lots of trouble on their land.
Our societies attitudes of today are a very dramatic in change, we now welcome every different race and are not racist towards other skin colours or languages. Although i do believe there are still some racist people in our society.
Chinese experience in Australia
Some of the Chinese
immigrants were deckhands, passengers, indentured labourers and people who were
hoping to send money back to their own families because they were poor back
where they had currently lived. The immigrants were mostly mind workers to
search for gold; they were known to be very hard workers.
Most Chinese settlers came
to Australia to search for gold. In1852 news of gold had reached southern China,
and many men from Honk Hong, Shantou and Xiamen’s shippers arrived under a
credit-ticket system, with fares to be paid once fortunes were made. The
Chinese did not only mine for gold, but took on jobs such as cooks, peddlers,
and storekeepers. In the first decade after the discovery of gold, many had
taken jobs nobody else wanted or that were considered too dirty for the locals.
They came here because China is a very big country and some wanted to see
fortune here in Australia.
The Chinese immigrants came
to Australia in the 20th century some time. Most Chinese settlers
came to Australia in 1848 to search for gold in the minds but in1861 and act
was past to reduce the number of Chinese people aloud into the colony. So from
there on they had to try and find other ways of producing money by opening
stores, becoming merchants and a fish curing industry which supplied dry fish
to the Chinese people throughout NSWS as well as Melbourne. Other occupations
included scrub cutters, cooks, interpreters, market gardeners, cabinetmakers,
tobacco farmers and drapers.
When the Chinese immigrants first
got here they went straight to the mind fields and then as the city’s and towns
popped up they all started working there and some even worked on properties.

Military and cultural imperialism
Q1: Military Imperialism and cultural imperialism
Military Imperialism is a category of military policy, which calls for the creation of an "imperial empire", as it could be named. The control of one or a number of countries by a dominant nation. This control may be political, economic, or both, and indicates a degree of requirement in the outranked nation.
Cultural imperialism is described as the cultural characteristics of imperialism. Imperialism, here, is referring to the establishment and maintenance of unequal relationships between civilizations supporting the more powerful civilisation. Many scholars employ the term, particularly those in the fields of history, cultural studies, and postcolonial theory. The term is generally used in an uncomplimentary sense, frequently in coincidence with a call to reject such influence. Cultural imperialism can take different forms, such as an attitude, a formal policy, military action, so long as it emphasises cultural hegemony .
The difference of cultural and military Imperialism is, cultural imperialism is suggesting to the creation and maintenance of unequal relationships between civilizations supporting the most powerful. Military imperialism is a policy only some military’s use because it is the policies of such governments.
